Focus 7.2 | Primary Survey, Secondary Survey & On-Going Care

Primary Survey:
Assessment and management of  problems related to the ABCS’s:
Airway
Breathing
Circulation
Defibrillation, Deadly Bleed, Dealing with Shock

 

Secondary Survey:
A three part assessment performed if time, and the casualty’s condition, permits:

  • Interview casualty and bystanders to determine the history of the emergency, and casualty’s medical condition.
  • Vital Signs Assessment:  pulse and breathing rates, level of consciousness, pupil dilation, skin colour and temperature.
  • Body Sweep to determine any further injuries.

On-Going Care:
Once life-threatening conditions have been addressed, EMS has been activated and a full Secondary Survey has been conducted, the first aider may perform On-Going Care.  

On-Going Care consists of:
–  constantly monitoring the casualty for changes, especailly their ABCD’s
–  treatment for Shock with WARTS until EMS arrives
