A Case Study in AED Usage During Medical Emergencies

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) have made lay-rescuers an indispensible link in the chain of survival. It is important, however, for first responders to remember the basics: AEDs should be applied to patients that are unconscious and either not breathing or not breathing normally. Rescuers should always visually assess their patient before delivering a shock. If the patient does develop signs life (e.g. changing level of consciousness or regular breathing) the rescuer should refrain from delivering a shock even if the AED prompts him or her to do so. In all other instances, first responders should follow the instructions provided by the AED.
