School Certifications and SHSM
High School and Career College Courses are modified to meet the needs of each group of students and can be held during regularly scheduled class periods. Each course consists of lecture and practice sessions as well as written tests that will be returned to the teacher within one week of the course completion date. In this WSIB approved Standard First Aid course, you will learn all the topics in the Emergency First Aid with CPR ‘B’ as well as the following specific topics:

— Musculoskeletal Injuries;

SHSM COURSE: WHMIS
The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is a comprehensive plan for providing information on the safe use of hazardous materials used in Canadian workplaces. Information is provided by means of product labels, material safety data sheets (MSDS) and worker education programs.

The OXYGEN THERAPY & RESPIRATORY EMERGENCIES component teaches recognition and treatment of respiratory conditions including COPD and Hypoxia, Safe handling and use of oxygen tanks, administering O2, and the use of suction devices.

SPECIALTY CERTIFICATION: WILDERNESS FIRST AID*
The Wilderness First Aid Course was created by those who took trips in remote areas and found out that the regularly taught first aid courses did not train them for what could be expected in the forest or mountains they were visiting. And, therefore, a group of physicians from the Wilderness Medical Society, created a set of practice guidelines, providing the framework for Wilderness First Aid courses.
This course teaches you all that you need to know about the basics of packaging and transporting injured patients as well as managing life and limb threats in remote environments. This course includes the prevention and treatment of common environmental problems like Hypothermia and Heat Exhaustion and Stroke. In addition, you will also learn:
— Rescue and Evacuation;
— Patient Assessment System;
— Long-Term Patient Care;
— Systemic and Localized Thermal Emergencies;
— Environmental Emergencies;
— Shock & Trauma Extremity injuries;
— Medical Emergencies;
— In-depth scenarios with theatrical make-up;

SPECIALTY CERTIFICATION: FALL PROTECTION LEVEL 1 (AWARENESS)
Target Audience: Anyone who actively works at height, health and safety representatives, and safety officers/consultants
Evaluations: Written Exam
COURSE OUTLINE
- Discuss current Ontario legislation pertaining to fall protection;
- Discuss and evaluate current fall protection plan pertaining to company policy;
- Evaluate methods a worker is required to use at a worksite;
- Identify fall hazards specific to their worksite;
- Assess and select specific anchors that the worker may use;
- Understand correct use of connecting hardware;
- Understand the meaning of pre-use inspections
- Understand emergency response procedures specific to their worksite;
- Become comfortable inspecting, fitting, adjusting, and connecting fall protection systems and components; and
- Understand the effect of falling from heights, including maximum arresting forces acting on the body, purposes and limitations of shock absorbers, and the difference between a swing fall and a free fall.
The course may be taught anywhere/anytime. However, we would prefer to teach this course onsite so we can get into more site specific training.

Target Audience: Anyone who actively works at height, anyone assigned to emergency response within their facility/worksite, health and safety representatives, safety officer/consultants, emergency response personal, and aspiring fire fighters
Evaluations: Written Exam on Day 1 and Skills Test on Day 2
COURSE OUTLINE
Day 1
- Fall Protection Level 1 (Awareness) as outlined above
Day 2 (Site Specific)
- Numerous scenarios where we will practice and evaluate rescues involving suspended workers off elevated platforms and ladders;
- Use a variety of different rescue systems to enhance the students’ knowledge and comfort level. These include rogliss, haul systems, pick poles, and rescue rope;
- Students will become comfortable responding to an incident where a worker has fallen into a suspended vertical position;
- Students will look at different medical emergencies including suspension trauma and the importance of a fast, controlled rescue;
- We will practice basic knot craft and various mechanical advantage systems; and
- We will look at your current rescue plan ensuring all workers involved are aware of their roles and responsibilities while giving recommendations where needed.
We prefer to teach these courses onsite OR we can put together a site that has the structures necessary to adequately complete the training.

SPECIALTY CERTIFICATION: CONFINED SPACE LEVEL 1 (AWARENESS)
Target Audience: Anyone who works within a confined space, health and safety representatives, safety officers and consultants.

COURSE OUTLINE
- Discuss current Ontario legislation pertaining to confined spaces;
- Discuss our roles and responsibilities when entering into a confined space;
- Explain the importance of hazard assessments and entry permit systems;
- Evaluate the difference between restricted spaces and confined spaces;
- Discuss current confined spaces we deal with day to day; and
- Evaluate current rescue plan and make recommendations where needed.

Day 2 (Site Specific)
- Site specific rescue scenarios ranging from sewers, tanks, trenches, and underground storage vessels;
- Students will become comfortable using a variety of rescue/safety equipment including haul systems, self-retracting lifelines, rescue rope, pick poles, and full body harnesses; and
- Students will become confident writing rescue plans and understanding their roles and responsibilities.

SPECIALTY CERTIFICATION: SPILL PREVENTION
Course Details & Objectives
Having a spill prevention plan in place is among the most effective and efficient tools in preventing environmental contamination. Our training program will discuss spill-related pollution, spill prevention techniques, appropriate policies/procedures for controlling a spill in the event that one occurs, and an introduction to equipment that is used in today’s industry to effectively contain a spill. We will also discuss the difference between a major and minor spill and the impact that it will have on personal and environment. We will make reference to both WHMIS and TDG.
